This green truck filled with flowers is headed off to a beautiful home in Garden City, NY. My friend Peggerty commissioned me to paint it as a gift for her brother and sister-in-law. Green can be a tricky color for me, especially when it is in sun and shade as with this shiny truck. So before I started, I mixed up a few color combinations so I could stay focused. My greens were made from cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, veridian green, cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium yellow light and cadmium yellow medium.

Meet Bernice! Newly refreshed, having just gone under the brush, she is feeling reborn! Formerly known as "Bug 13," Bernice has had her rather funky badly- painted purple shadow removed and replaced with a more age-appropriate blue one. Madam's hard candy shell has been re-painted, touched up and buffed to a shine with more intense highlights and deeper shadows. And her spots have been refurbished and surrounded with a shimmering coat of intense Rouge Carmin by Sennelier. Bernice is now indeed ready for a night on the town.

Independently wealthy and never married, Bernice enjoys traveling, art, the ballet and long walks on the bricks in the front yard of her palatial estate in the Hamptons. A bit eccentric and a tad flighty, she is nevertheless, always in demand and a delightful guest at any garden party.

This is my friend Jenny's cat. I never would have thought to grab my camera and snap a photo of him, if it wasn't for the work of artist Dreama Tolle Perry. In truth, I am not much of a "cat person," but Perry paints cats all the time, and they are quite beautiful. She certainly has changed my perspective, as any good artist should. For the Daily Paintworks Challenge this week, we had to paint in the style of one of our favorite artists. So I am choosing Perry. While I didn't quite capture her style, she most certainly influenced the painting.

The painting is going to be raffled off on December 11th as part of a fundraiser for the East Hampton School District. A few weeks ago I travelled to Florence, Italy to see my daughter who is studying there this semester. She is taking painting, photography, jewelry and art history. While there, I took lots of pictures to paint from when I got back home. I've started with this one. It's her, outside a cafe, waiting for a cappuccino. That's my husband inside, figuring out the euro conversion. Notice her shoes - Italian, hand-made and already her favorites. There are amazingly beautiful things to see in Florence, but without a doubt, she is the most beautiful. Counting the days until her homecoming.

I painted earlier in Sept. at Jamie's in Palenville. It is another one of the waterfalls on her property. I think she has five waterfalls! The water was rushing strong and furious. This is actually one half of the "Split" falls. The other half is blocked. But it doesn't matter, the water flows and we Artists show up to paint. THE LADYBUG INSTALLATION Number One

The bugs are back! Clearly the vision I had of myself courageously attacking the "Red Beret" canvas, paint brush in one hand, negative self-talk force-field shield in the other, has morphed into me as a quivering tower of jello, shield gone, with not a paint brush in sight. It's cool though. This too shall pass. Some day, real soon, I'll take up both brush and shield and finish that sucker, but for now, I'm giving it some space.

Which would explain my retreat to the safety of bugs. I'm creating an installation of 16 separate, 8x8 inch ladybugs painted on 3/4" cradled hardboard and this is the first one. They can be purchased separately at $100 each or as the completed installation for $1500. The group will be available by mid October. If one is sold separately, it will be replaced with a new pose with the entire 16 boards completed and available by October 15th. Bees next!

The title for this painting came to me the minute I took the reference photo. Much too easy! A whistle blower, that's someone that spills the story, let's everybody know something's gone wrong, won't keep quiet to play it safe- a lifeguard in many ways. Never playing it safe- ready and waiting to jump in and save someone's life. Thank goodness for them right. Anyway, I love the beach and really enjoy watching the guards close up shop at the end of the day. Their signaling, flag flapping and arm movements all baffle me except for the the long whistling they do when it's time for them to leave and swimmers take their lives into their own hands. This guard in particular had the perfect stance and was just about to blow his whistle for the 6pm closing. I used a type of white in this one that absolutely drove me crazy- it's called "mixing white" and has a super loose consistency. I mean super loose. It really only worked with my thickest opaque colors. Anyway, it was basically my only frustration. I had never used it before and never will again! In the end I got it to work for me and feel good about the outcome. I video taped the entire 2hr sitting from start to finish and am now working on finding a simple to use video editor. Not an easy task for the computer novice. I'm determined though and look forward to doing a time lapse on this experience adding background music and eventually uploading it to my YouTube channel. Any ideas with regard to the editor please let me know!

OK, so my video is only 3 min and 26 secs long but it took me looooooooooonger to make than it takes me to paint a landscape!! Had a really neat time putting it together using Aquasoft slideshow. Cannot for the life of me remember where I found that in cyber space but it's here and working and I'm excited. I think the best part was hunting for the music to go along with it. If you're a fan of classical Spanish guitar like moi you'll like it. I used a piece played by John H. Clarke called "Pursuit of the Cygnus Thief", just beautiful and the perfect quick pace to keep my images flowing smoothly. www.GiselleMcMenamin.com

AHHHHHHH! Finally a new painting done! I can't believe so much time went by and I didn't get anything done before this. Anyway, this one was a quickie. Only about 1 1/2 hrs. Promised myself since studio time has been limited lately with all family members home, I'd move quickly. This is a piece that I am adding to my Bethany Beach series I started mid summer. It was one of the last shots I took as I perused the late afternoon scene on a picture perfect day. The gal didn't look like she was going anywhere soon and seemed to be very comfortable all by her lonesome listening to the "quiet". Comfort Zone came to mind when I finished the painting. That place we all like to be where we feel no stress and things are going according to plan, no disruptions just total peace for a little while anyway. Few and far between for me but this painting brought me to that place. Really enjoyed the process.

I was there painting with a roster of talented Artists. I was pleased that I could compete among them and actually win for this painting.

Having a good time adding to my beach series this week. Here's a small oil painting of a couple I spotted this summer. I got a kick out of seeing them texting side by side- in the same position no less. Wonder if they were texting each other! They say a good relationship is based on how well you communicate so perhaps this is the beginning of a wave of therapy in marriage counseling. Who knows. Anyway, I thought it made for a good comment on today's technology driven society. I'm as much a part of it as the next gal. With respect to the process of developing this piece I literally just jumped right into it with a simple sketch in pencil to help me keep the proportions balanced initially. My main focus lately is to get the values on target. I find myself spending a lot more time mixing colors and making sure they're the right temperature before I lay it all down. I get extremely frustrated when it doesn't work out.

Great to be back painting this week. here's a small oil I finished this afternoon of a young girl gently floating in the pool I was visiting while on vacation in Bethany. I loved painting the reflections and shadows in the water. tried to really keep everything loose and free. One of the many advantages of working so small is my inability to overwork such a small area of panel! That's a good thing for me. Feedback would be great.

I just can't get enough of the beach scene. I went out every morning while on vacation down in Bethany Beach, De and soaked up as much sunshine as possible. Love it especially when the beach is quiet in the early morning and it feels like I have it all to myself. Anyway, here's my first attempt at painting a landscape on a very small panel, only 5x7! I must say it kept me from reworking because I moved from one element to the next in no time and had a finished piece. Felt great. Struggled a bit with the figure because she was so tiny but all in all I'm happy with it.

Can never get enough of the beach scene whether crowded and noisy or empty and tranquil. I love it all. This is one of the images I saw early in the morning on the 4th of July while on vacation in Bethany Beach, Delaware. As I was taking my morning walk on the beach this man silently rowed along the shore with the flag up. It was a sight for sore eyes and I know I haven't done it justice but enjoyed the process anyway. Couldn't wait to paint this one.

So many times I 've walked into a gallery, in NYC mind you, to be treated like I wasn't even there. Not a good sales approach for sure. Usually I'm scoping the location out to see what the reception is like and if I'd want to show my work there. Why bother putting time into a show if nobody is going to support your work with enthusiasm or general information?? Although Carolyn Henderson's article references a yarn shop the concept is relevant to any sales venue. Read below for a glimpse at the huge marketing faux pas of not being friendly or inviting.

The above piece is one I painted this week of a lady resting on the railings leading up to the Met. Thought she was the epitome of the NYC dweller with the "get out of my face attitude" that you see there so often. Tough and rich. Loved her red shoes too, regardless of the attitude.

A contrarian. The dictionary defines this person as someone who takes an opposing view, especially one who rejects the majority opinion. I am, in point of fact, married to a contrarian, which makes life, as one might imagine, quite interesting. It works out really well actually. I'm your basic cosmic muffin, he's completely grounded. He keeps me from floating off into space and I've loosened his stranglehold on reality. Am I repeating myself? Anyway, once I got past the need to be right all the time, I found our discussions quite illuminating and I've come to the conclusion that if there isn't one in every crowd, there should be.

Here's Raz, aka Razoo-Dazzoo, as he cops a few Z's on the couch sometime during the holiday weekend. We set up a speaker cabinet in front of the screen door so the boys could rail at passersby to their hearts content without going through the screen while we jammed. They ran themselves ragged running back and forth from the front to the back door, thinking that anyone who walked, biked, ran or drove out of their view would inevitably end up in our back yard. Adorable. However it was nice when their batteries ran down and they needed a rest.
